I always was thinking that self-leadership is equal to self-improving. And it’s not wrong, but part of its meaning was interpreted wrong by me. Let me explain.
When it comes to routines that encourage you to make daily right steps towards your vision and mission - it is the right thing to do. A strong leader needs first to be able to manage her actions, following her decisions. But I also was thinking that self-leadership means you always need to improve yourself. And once, when I was reading Robin Sharma’s book “ Leader who had no title”, I was bewildered by an opposite statement from his 4th teacher Jet, who said: “Self-leadership isn’t about improving, because there’s nothing really wrong with you. It’s more about remembering. Remembering your inner leader and then making your relationship with it stronger each day. Self-leadership has so much to do with simply reconnecting to the person you once were—to your true nature.”
I have been reflecting on this idea and I must admit it was making more and more sense. First of all, we can’t all be the same, even though it means the same as any best person you know. For instance, I consider Tonny Robbins one of the best trainers in the world. If all trainers in the world will be the same good as Tonny, he will not be the best anymore. On top of that, I feel it completely wrong, because I like the diversity and I want other trainers to be different.
Second, If I simply would follow somebody’s feature and be harsh with my reporters, I would feel awful, because It would strike an inner conflict with my values and principles. I am much more a collaborative and empathetic person and therefore my strong leadership quality is to hear the other person, understand and find a consensus.
If everyone would play with the same strong features it would be such a flat, boring and inefficient, because every situation needs a different approach, different leaders. By the way, this concept is also supporting the idea that everyone can be the leader, which I personally strongly believe in.
So, reconnect with your true self and discipline your actions in reinforcing your potential, being always the best version of yourself.
