Goal setting is an important part of my life. From school I have been organizing hardly my preparations for homework and tests. It was always in the last day or hour. So, It wasn't an easy time and I always was reminded by my parents that I need to do things.
In university the weren't parents around me and I started to explore what can help me to succeed in my results and be able to achieve what I want. I have to mention that my courses were in not my native language and I really need a lot of time and to put a lot of effort to accomplish all tasks. In this way I started my journey, regarding GOAL SETTING.
Today, I have a huge experience in making my goal true! And it's not so hard as it seems for a lot of us, if you know some secret principles that change your perception about things you want to have or become. One the newest experiences I had is goal setting with your partner. Is more complex, because there is not just what you desire in this life. It's not just about your ambition or plans. It's about you both as ONE. And it was super exited to experience this new tool, that started as a funny thing and turned in 4 hours of brainstorming and exploring each other.
Before I will describe what we did, I would like to address you a question. How often do you discuss with you partner how do you see your future together?
Whatever you answer - I assume a lot of people struggle to talk about this and feel uncomfortable to ask or either answer what they want to be or do in future. Because of that, we find out in 4-5 years that the person we loved and inspired is not anymore the same person, we have different interests and see our future in different colors.
This tool will help you to align your goals by a common vision as a couple, will show you better the interests of your partner and will help you to see how you can support each other in the better world.
1. Put down on a paper your personal goals in 8 basic sphere of your life: Business or Career, Finance, Health, Relationship, Recreation and Play, Personal/Professional/Spiritual development, Service or Contribution, Environment. (your partner do it for him/herself)
2. Visualize this goals - prepare images that will be part of your future visual board, draw them
3. When your personal goals are clear, arrange a table you can work together and have an A2 paper to organise your common visual board. Be prepared that a lot of thing you could draw in new format, cut just part of your picture and mix it with your partner's things. Also, be open to your partner ideas, ask if there is something not clear, explain why these things are important for you. And even there are things you do not see yourself as part of them- show support and respect.
4. First, choose an area from the 8 basic ones you analysed. Present your goals and what they mean for you.
5. Let your partner present his/her goals.
6. Find the common things, ideas, principles, brainstorm numbers or specific details. Agree on the final picture of your common goal as a couple. Visualize this goal on the paper. It shouldn't be perfect, you can update later. But it's important to fix the idea in scheme or picture of some words.
7. Brainstorm all 8 spheres and you will find a lot of common things together and a lot of things you never discussed before. If you do not agree about something - what is ok - try to make clear why this point is important for the one who is presenting and how this thing effects relation if it doesn't happen. Try to have as many details as possible to make clear that you both speak about the same thing. If there is no common view about the issue- then keep it on your personal goal setting and with time you can prove by real life and practice how it effects your life and results (hopefully positively).
8. When you build you common visual board- choose at least 3 actions that you can do as a couple before the next month in order to achieve your life goals. Stick some notes with dates and actions on your visual board. Hang it up on the wall, you can see daily for reminder to take actions!
